Stephen A. Smith argued that accusations of racism against Donald Trump actually empowered his base, pointing to Trump’s long history of interaction with Black individuals as evidence against these claims. He stated, "Black people, minorities in this country that called him a racist did him a favor when they did that. They galvanized his base to say, 'We don’t want to hear that.' They looked at the economy, at borders, and at crime..."
Smith further emphasized Trump's diverse interactions, saying, "the visual that you talk about, it played a role because he knew he had a portfolio of appearances with Black folks throughout decades where you had no problem with him..." He contended that old allegations would not hold up against Trump's visible comfort around minorities.
He also highlighted the inconsistency in scrutinizing Trump’s past compared to that of Joe Biden, referencing Biden's association with former Ku Klux Klan member Senator Byrd. Smith remarked, "If you’re going to bring up him in the 1970s... then don't you have to bring up Biden and his relationship with Senator Byrd, who... was a former member of the Ku Klux Klan?"
