'Telling our history correctly': Activist hosts Black history class under a tree at FIU
Briefly

Historian Marvin Dunn organized a learning event at Florida International University to educate attendees on the Rosewood Massacre, a historical event largely overlooked in school curricula. Students like Stephanie Borden reflected on their own limited Black history education, often learned from family rather than schools. Dunn's class emphasized the importance of standing against current political attacks on democracy and sought to provide students with a more comprehensive understanding of Black history, particularly that of the Rosewood Massacre, outside of institutional approval.
"It's important now to stand up. It's important now to resist this attack on our democracy," Dunn said. "Most of my colleagues, if not all of them at FIU, are vulnerable."
Stephanie Borden noted, "I did not get taught a lot of Black history from school... My learning of Black history came from my family."
Dunn's efforts to provide free education didn't get approval from FIU officials, highlighting his commitment to teaching Black history independently.
The event emphasized the need to address historical topics like the Rosewood Massacre, expanding students' understanding beyond traditional curriculum.
