Karen Read can't point to Colin Albert as possible killer, judge rules

Judge Beverly Cannone has ruled that while Karen Read can pursue a third-party culprit defense in her retrial for the death of Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe, she cannot accuse Colin Albert of the crime. The judge found insufficient evidence to support claims against Albert while allowing potential implications against other individuals. Read's first murder trial ended with a hung jury, and prosecutors contend she intentionally struck O'Keefe with her SUV, while the defense claims O'Keefe was attacked after arriving at a party.

"The evidence of opportunity is wholly inadequate. There is no evidence that Colin Albert was at 34 Fairview when the defendant and Mr. O'Keefe arrived at the home."

"The judge also cast doubt on the defense team's claims that Colin Albert had 'bad blood' with O'Keefe and had angered O'Keefe."
