Orioles Activate, Option Heston Kjerstad
Heston Kjerstad has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list after missing the season with a hamstring strain and has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. He fills the only vacancy on Baltimore’s 40-man roster, which is otherwise at capacity. Kjerstad has not produced at the major league level, posting a .218/.284/.365 slash across 314 plate appearances, with a 28% strikeout rate and a 5.7% walk rate. He makes solid hard contact but chases pitches and contacts less effectively when expanding the zone. In Triple-A, he has been productive, hitting .274/.354/.482 with a 9.4% walk rate and 24% strikeout rate, including 29 home runs and 36 doubles over 755 plate appearances. His limited MLB opportunities have been influenced by health issues and roster usage patterns.
"To this point, Kjerstad has never really gotten an extended look as an everyday outfielder. Health troubles have played a role in that but aren't entirely at the root of the issue. He's twice been on the major league injured list due to concussions, and last year's season ended with an unspecified medical issue; he reported severe fatigue to the Orioles, which prompted a wave of testing. The team never disclosed the results of that testing, but Kjerstad appears healthy enough for game action now."
