
A mother was convicted of murdering her 14-month-old son after giving him a fatal mixture of prescription medications. A family court hearing on November 8, 2024 ordered that the child be removed from the household. After the hearing, she hid in her loft and later refused police access to the child. Police forced entry and found them in the loft. Evidence showed she prepared a bottle containing milk and medication and gave it to the toddler, leading to his death. She initially told police the child was sleeping, then admitted she had killed him. She attempted suicide during police attendance, and the child died on New Year’s Eve 2024.
"Judge Mr Justice Derek Sweeting said the 36-year-old had parked her car at Epping Forest then walked back home. Essex Police said Barnett and Oakley were initially reported as missing, with suggestions Barnett had taken her son to Epping Forest, but they later forced entry to her home and discovered them in the loft. The judge said Barnett had later said in interview that she wanted the police to think I was in the forest so I could stay indoors with Oakley."
