State Sen. John Keenan draws unsettling parallels between online sports betting in Massachusetts and the opioid epidemic, highlighting aggressive marketing strategies employed by companies that exploit vulnerable individuals. He proposes the 'Bettor Health Act' aimed at enforcing stringent regulations to mitigate gambling addiction risks. This new bill would limit specific betting practices, enhance funding for addiction treatment, and impose mandatory reporting requirements on companies. Keenan's concerns reflect observations made shortly after online betting legalization, emphasizing the urgent need for regulatory action to protect potential gamblers from addiction.
They target these people, knowing that they are addicted, and they make most of their money off of those that are addicted. And they do it with very aggressive marketing, much like Purdue Pharma did.
The proposed legislation, dubbed the 'Bettor Health Act,' seeks to impose important regulations on the state's growing sports betting industry.
Keenan insists that comparisons between sports betting marketing tactics and those of the opioid industry are not exaggerations but alarming realities.
We are already behind... alarm bells started to go off for him soon after online sports betting was legalized in Massachusetts two years ago.
