Rare good news for the T: Ridership is actually up
Briefly

MBTA General Manager Phil Eng announced an $18 million increase in fare revenue this fiscal year, attributed to rising ridership and enhanced service reliability. Subway ridership increased notably, with the Green Line seeing a 40% surge compared to February 2024. While these trends are encouraging, the MBTA still faces significant operational deficits. Eng emphasized the importance of making public transportation a preferred option and expressed optimism about continued ridership recovery.
We want to have people continue to come back after they see that we could deliver reliable service.
By the MBTA's count, average weekday ridership last month was around 808,071 systemwide, compared to 1,197,521 in February 2019.
