A Vermont federal judge is reviewing the jurisdiction over Rümeysa Öztürk's case, a Tufts graduate student detained by ICE, which impacts her bail request. Judge William K. Sessions III stated he cannot consider her release until jurisdiction is confirmed. Öztürk's lawyers aim for bail while government attorneys argue jurisdiction lies with immigration courts. Öztürk, a Turkish Fulbright Scholar, has been held since March 25 after being arrested near her home and currently awaits further hearings as her case shifts back and forth between courts.
Sessions told lawyers that if the court has no jurisdiction over the case, then it cannot rule on Öztürk's petition, according to the Globe.
Ramzi Kassem, one of more than a dozen lawyers representing Öztürk, urged Simmons to release her and asserted that the court has the power to do so, the Globe reported.
