The New York City Council, led by Councilmember Susan Zhuang, has introduced a resolution designating May 10 as the city's first annual Chinese American Railroad Workers Memorial Day. This initiative honors the significant yet often overlooked contributions of Chinese American workers who played a vital role in the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The event will feature descendants of Chinese railroad workers and notable figures from the Asian American community, aiming to highlight the importance of immigrants in America's history amidst contemporary polarized views on immigration.
“May 10th, 1869: the transcontinental railroad was completed thanks to the dangerous and difficult labor of workers, many who were Chinese Americans,” said Zhuang.
“The conversation around immigration in America has become polarized, often demonizing immigrants. I want our City and Country to remember: immigrants came to America and dedicated their lives to building better lives for themselves, their families, and America.”
“Asian Americans are a major part of American History and can't be forgotten.”
Cosponsors include Brooklyn Councilmember Farah N. Louis (D-45) in support of the resolution for honoring Chinese American Railroad workers.
