Coney Island gets a Business Improvement District to boost business and safety
""People will not show up in districts where they don't feel safe," said Daniel Murphy, executive director of the Alliance. "So we have to make it safer through cameras, through our relationships with local enforcement agencies, and through activities.""
""There is no customer. There is nothing, very slow. I can't even pay my rent this month, and I'm not the only one complaining," said Yelena Farea, a local store owner."
""a long uphill battle""
Coney Island established a Business Improvement District last month to revitalize Mermaid and Surf Avenues with local retail, event promotions, cleaner streets, and enhanced safety. The Alliance for Coney Island led the effort and plans to use cameras, partnerships with enforcement agencies, and activities to attract visitors. Some shop owners fear the BID may favor larger businesses and remember the 2019 Mermaid Avenue protests, citing slow business and rent difficulties. Other proprietors hope the BID will increase tourism and foot traffic. BID operations are scheduled to begin in July 2027, with continued advocacy for small businesses.
