Construction on Flatbush Avenue Redesign Restarts
"Our crews will be here on Flatbush Avenue undertaking a large reconstruction of the corridor, from Flatbush Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn to Grand Army Plaza. Now that the weather is warmed and the construction season is here, the real work starts today."
"This design will separate out bus lanes from general traffic lanes, allowing for dedicated space that will significantly improve travel times for the bus lines that operate in this area."
The Mamdani administration is resuming construction on Brooklyn's Flatbush Avenue to fulfill a campaign promise of faster bus transit. The project includes center-running bus lanes, concrete boarding islands, and new pedestrian space. Construction will occur on one side of the street at a time to minimize traffic disruption. The redesign targets several bus lines, which serve 132,000 daily riders, aiming to improve their speed from the current average of four miles per hour. Traffic signals will be optimized to maintain smooth vehicle flow during construction.
