Briefly

The Fire Department has dealt with more than 170 fires in 2024 linked to lithium-ion batteries that suffered catastrophic malfunctions, including batteries that were not charging at the time.
The most recent serious fire triggered by a faulty battery occurred at 2411 Dean St. in Brooklyn on Aug. 26, leading to a four-alarm inferno that injured three firefighters and six civilians.
Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker stated, 'These bike fires are taxing our units. For more than three years, we have been on the front lines responding to the dangers of loft fires.'
The remains of a lithium-ion battery and e-bike linked to the four-alarm fire were displayed at a press conference, raising awareness of the hazards associated with faulty batteries.
