Feds probing tugboat's possible role in deadly Mexican ship, Brooklyn Bridge crash
Briefly

The NTSB is investigating a tugboat's possible involvement in a collision between a Mexican tall ship, Cuauhtemoc, and the Brooklyn Bridge that resulted in two sailor fatalities. An NTSB briefing highlighted the need to examine tugboat procedures and access the Mexican ship and crew for information. Preliminary investigation indicates the vessel lost steering shortly after requesting tugboat assistance. Access to both the ship's engine and crew remains pending as NTSB coordinates with Mexican authorities.
We haven't yet had a chance to access the engine. We haven't had a chance to talk to any of the crew at this point.
Part of our investigation will be to look into procedures involving tug boats in the harbor.
At 8:24 p.m., a [voyage data recorder] radio broadcast was sounded requesting assistance from other tugboats in the area of the Brooklyn Bridge.
Questions have arisen over whether the tug may have too quickly released the ship, when then barreled in reverse into the span.
