The article narrates the author's journey from being a high school student in Red Hook, Brooklyn, to becoming a substitute teacher at their alma mater. After facing significant challenges, including mental health issues and homelessness, they found stability through the Mott Street Scholarship Program at the University of Mount Saint Vincent. This program not only provided financial support but also fostered a community of peers and mentors. Now pursuing a master's in special education, the author aims to empower students who encounter similar adversities.
My journey to this point has been anything but conventional. After graduating high school, I attended a college in upstate New York... but instead, it became a period of struggle.
It was life-changing. The scholarship provided me with full tuition coverage at UMSV, on-campus housing all year round, a meal plan, academic support and more.
