On May 20, Brooklyn lawmakers and community members rallied at City Hall to urge the City Council to allocate $5 million in next year's budget to combat deed theft. This issue predominantly affects Black and Brown homeowners in rapidly gentrifying areas, with Brooklyn experiencing the highest number of complaints. Deed theft, an illegal transfer of property ownership, poses a significant threat to vulnerable homeowners, often seniors. The proposed funding would support legal services and outreach programs to help affected individuals and raise awareness about such scams.
Brooklyn will not tolerate scammers coming to our borough to prey on vulnerable Black and Brown homeowners and stealing their homes.
A typical deed theft case can require upwards of 300 attorney hours and seven years to complete, which is a significant burden for victims.
