Mayor Eric Adams announced that 13 emergency migrant shelters will close in NYC by June, reducing the total number of shelter beds amidst a decreasing influx of migrants.
The mayor stated, 'The additional closures we are announcing today, provides yet another example of our continued progress and the success of our humanitarian efforts to care for everyone throughout our system.'
Advocates expressed concerns that while they are pleased with some closures, it is insufficient without stable housing solutions, criticizing the city's approach as 'shelter whack-a-mole.'
Murad Awawdeh highlighted the challenges faced by migrants, saying, 'While we are glad that large congregate settings like Hall Street are being closed, we expected that the city would do more to move people to safer and more stable long-term housing.'
