Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Brooklyn College President Michelle Anderson announced the launch of New York's first Advanced Certificate in Perinatal Mental Health. This initiative, developed in partnership with multiple departments, aims to reduce the high maternal mortality rates among Black and Brown mothers in New York City. The program targets licensed professionals including OB-GYNs, doulas, and nurses, offering flexible coursework that incorporates clinical experience. With a focus on mental health conditions, the initiative seeks to fill significant gaps in maternal care, particularly in Brooklyn’s underserved areas where the need is dire.
The PMH program aims to address maternal health disparities among Black and Brown mothers, who are disproportionately affected by maternal mortality in New York City.
This innovative PMH program will provide essential training for professionals supporting pregnant mothers experiencing mental health conditions, thus improving maternal and child health outcomes.
