Weigh-in-motion tech has cut overweight trucks on BQE by 60%, city says, urging state to extend program * Brooklyn Paper
Briefly

The deployment of weigh-in-motion technology on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway has resulted in a significant reduction of overweight trucks by 60%, improving road safety and extending infrastructure lifespan. Initially, 7,920 overweight trucks crossed the Queens-bound section daily, but now that figure stands at about 3,041 per month. The technology detects violations and fines drivers $650. With plans for implementation on the Staten Island-bound lanes, city officials are pushing for the bill facilitating this technology to be extended as it is set to expire this year.
Weigh-in-Motion technology has successfully eliminated 60% of the overweight truck traffic on the Queens bound BQE. I am pleased WIM is finally being implemented on Staten Island bound lanes and hope to see a similar reduction in illegal, overweight trucks to extend the lifespan of the triple cantilever structure.
The reduction is a win for the city's Department of Transportation, which implemented weigh-in-motion hoping to cut truck traffic and extend the lifespan of the aging triple cantilever.
