The article features an interview with Kelefa Sanneh, who profiles Mike White, the creator of 'The White Lotus'. Sanneh discusses White's transition from indie films like 'Chuck & Buck' to his massive success with HBO. He reflects on how White's earlier, unconventional projects shaped his vision and how his life experiences, including his stint on 'Survivor', influenced his work. The profile sheds light on how 'The White Lotus' reflects broader societal themes that may resonate more in the future, pointing to its evolving relevance.
I wanted to write a piece that looked at White's career and thought through how he got from there to here.
Mike White is, by now, probably best known as the mind behind "The White Lotus," the globe-trotting television show that follows the debauchery of posh guests.
White's work has not always been so mainstream. Most of his career was defined by projects that were cerebral and a little weird.
The show might make more sense in 2025 than when it first aired, in 2021.
