A 50-year-old man and a partner climbed Mount Shasta's Clear Creek Trail and were caught in a storm on their descent. Low visibility, missing wet weather gear, and signs of altitude sickness complicated the descent and the pair became separated. The partner reached base camp, spoke with the disoriented climber by phone, then called 911. Snow and rain delayed search efforts until Sunday when a helicopter located the climber wedged between an ice sheet and a rock slope about a thousand feet below base camp. Rescuers airlifted him, but he died of massive head injuries at the hospital. This was the sixth rescue call on the Clear Creek Trail in two weeks.
"They were able to talk," Meyers said. "His friend at camp said he was sounding pretty disoriented."
"a slip and fall on the steep section of the mountain," Meyers said.
