California expects to avoid rolling blackouts this summer as new solar plants and large batteries plug into the state's grid. Officials forecast ample supplies due to recent grid additions.
Since 2020, California added 18.5 gigawatts of new resources, with 6.6 gigawatts from batteries, 6.3 gigawatts from solar, and 1.4 gigawatts from a combination of solar and storage.
State officials mentioned that even in severe circumstances like another heat wave, California now has backup resources, including gas-fired power plants for emergencies, able to supply an extra 5 gigawatts of electricity.
"We are going into the summer feeling much more prepared and confident," said Siva Gunda, vice chair of the California Energy Commission. He highlighted the importance of readiness for unexpected events like wildfires affecting transmission lines.
