The U.S. government filed lawsuits alleging that Edison failed to properly maintain power and transmission infrastructure where the Eaton Fire ignited on Jan. 7, seeking more than $40 million in damages to federal, state and local governments. A second suit alleges Edison's negligence sparked the Fairview Fire in September 2022, which burned more than 21 square miles of San Bernardino National Forest, killed two people, and destroyed 44 structures; the government seeks $37 million in damages to the U.S. Forest Service. Edison is reviewing the lawsuits.
