Local governments are uniting against federal immigration policies that threaten their funding and autonomy.
Federal authorities have brought a lawsuit against Orange County's top elections official for allegedly concealing information regarding non-citizen voter registrations, thus violating federal law.
"These kinds of state laws have the possibility to be really destabilizing to communities because they create an atmosphere of fear for people about the status of immigrants within their communities," said Bill Powell, an attorney for the plaintiffs.
Having funding to cover those indirect costs is essential for institutions around the country, as many of them rely heavily on that support for their operational needs.
