Demand for protection in San Jose after violent smash-and-grab robbery
"How weak do they think we are on public safety in Santa Clara County that they can do this in broad daylight and on a weekday - that's not acceptable,"
"We as a community have to stand united and demand that our governor give us more funding for police, give us more funding for license plate readers, give us more money for helicopters with fixed wings,"
"They were explicitly targeting Asian American homeowners, so there's a lot of fear in this community,"
A group of South Bay city leaders and community members held a press conference outside Grand Century Mall in San Jose to demand immediate protections for small businesses after a brazen smash-and-grab. Robbers used a car to crash into a jewelry store and shoved an 88-year-old owner to the ground; the owner suffered a stroke and has returned home. Officials called for increased funding for police, license plate readers, and aircraft. Leaders cited fear in the Asian American community after a separate burglary ring responsible for 80 burglaries and about $1 million in losses. San Jose police said the smash-and-grab investigation is a priority.
