"When we first got there, the fog was very dense. We could only make out the outline of the parachute,"
"It was a tense situation because both of the victims were pulling down on everyone and dragging us under,"
"But we were able to calm them down, and we were able to get them out of the water safely without any injuries."
"It definitely could have gone entirely different, but luckily, both of us were on the same page."
Two paragliders, a man and a woman, launched near Carbon Beach in Malibu and became disoriented when dense fog rolled in, causing them to plunge into the ocean around 12:30 p.m. The weight of the equipment and cords wrapped around their feet caused them to begin drowning. Deputies Christopher Matkin and Sevak Grigoryan responded, dropped their gear, ran into the water, and used knives to cut the tangled cords. The deputies calmed the victims, prevented rescuers from being dragged under, and removed both people from the water without injuries; both were treated on scene and released.
