A U.S. Navy E/A-18G Growler jet crashed into San Diego Harbor near Shelter Island, with pilots ejecting safely. Video showed the jet nosediving into the water, followed by a splash. The Navy established an Emergency Operations Center to assess the crash site, and investigations into the cause of the incident are underway. Quick action by security and safety teams helped minimize environmental impact. Fortunately, there were no civilian injuries reported, and the aviators, rescued shortly after the crash, were taken to a medical center in stable condition.
Naval Base Coronado has stood up an Emergency Operations Center in response to the mishap, and assessment of the crash site is ongoing.
The aircraft is part of the Electronic Attack Squadron VAQ 135, and the cause of the crash was under investigation.
