"State Parks officers at Lake Perris State Recreation Area responded at about 4:13 p.m. to reports of "screaming and persons in distress in the water" near Moreno Beach, a news release stated. When officers arrived by patrol boat, they found the father unconscious and partially submerged and the boy, who was in distress but conscious, holding onto his father to keep himself above water."
"Investigators said the pair had been kayaking offshore when the vessel overturned; neither had been wearing a life jacket at the time, although there had been one on board. Park officials said the father had "heroically" kept his son afloat until officers reached them. Both were pulled from the lake, and officers immediately began CPR on the father. Paramedics took the pair to Riverside University Health System, where the father was pronounced dead. The boy was evaluated at the hospital."
A 54-year-old father died after keeping his 7-year-old son afloat when their kayak capsized at Lake Perris. State Parks officers responded at about 4:13 p.m. to reports of "screaming and persons in distress in the water" near Moreno Beach and found the father unconscious and partially submerged and the boy conscious but holding onto his father. Investigators said neither wore life jackets although one was on board. Officers pulled both from the lake; CPR was started and paramedics transported them to Riverside University Health System, where the father was pronounced dead and the boy was evaluated. The death remains under investigation. Park officials urged properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets and noted California law requires children 12 and under to wear one on any moving recreational vessel.
