""Clearly, business leaders made the phone call to Donald Trump," Newsom said. "He decided - for the moment - on the basis of some very powerful and wealthy people who make phone calls to him to back off because it seemed to be in everyone's financial interests that they not make a spectacle of San Francisco.""
""great people like Jensen Huang, Marc Benioff, and others have called saying that the future of San Francisco is great. They want to give it a 'shot.' Therefore, we will not surge San Francisco on Saturday. Stay tuned!""
""I'm not thinking for a second that's the end of this in California. Quite the contrary. This guy's just winding up.""
Gavin Newsom praised San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie for adopting a restrained tone as President Donald Trump threatened to send federal troops to the city. Newsom attributed the temporary retreat to calls from Silicon Valley billionaires, saying powerful business leaders persuaded Trump to back off for financial reasons. Trump posted that Jensen Huang, Marc Benioff and others urged giving San Francisco a chance and announced he would not surge the city on Saturday. Newsom warned the threat may not be over and said Trump is "winding up." Newsom made the remarks at a San Jose rally for Proposition 50 while law enforcement reported at least one arrest after a CHP call of unlawful assembly near Coast Guard Island.
