Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill mandating speed alerts in new vehicles, citing concerns over federal regulations and potential disruptions to ongoing assessments of speed assistance systems.
Supporters of the legislation argued that it would reduce California’s traffic fatalities significantly, as speeding is a major factor in one-third of the annual 4,000 traffic-related deaths.
Although the bill aimed to enhance traffic safety with a passive speed assistance system, Newsom expressed that it presented challenges that would undermine existing federal safety standards.
Opposition to the bill included concerns that it would infringe on personal freedoms and that the warning system could lead to driver distractions and safety difficulties.
