Pickett Fire expands in Napa County mountains east of Calistoga as firefighters make gains on second day
Briefly

Fire crews made gains Friday against the Pickett Fire in Napa County while the blaze expanded past 3,000 acres, becoming the region's largest wildfire this year. The fire began Thursday afternoon on the northern outskirts of Calistoga and moved rapidly through steep, rugged terrain, prompting evacuation orders for dozens of rural residents and threatening several wineries and vineyards. Cooler temperatures and lighter winds on Friday allowed aircraft and ground crews to engage containment efforts during daytime hours. The fire grew by more than 1,100 acres since Thursday night and advanced along previous burn scars toward Pope Valley, with evacuations remaining in effect.

This is the biggest fire that we've had since 2020, Napa County Deputy Fire Marshal Erick Hernandez said. That year saw the Hennessey Fire and then the Glass Fire burn in much the same area. The Glass Fire, which burned for almost a month from late September through much of October, swept through 67,000 acres in Napa and Sonoma counties, destroying more than 1,500 structures.
