"The Associated Press has called the Proposition 50 election, saying that voters have passed the California redistricting measure. The statewide redistricting effort was promoted heavily by Gov. Gavin Newsom to counter Republican-led gerrymandering in Texas. The Alameda County Registrar of Voters posted the first updates on Tuesday evening, shortly after the polls closed at 8 p.m. The ballot measure had 80.1% of votes in support and 19.1% opposed, a tally entirely composed of mail-in ballots."
"The new Congressional maps will be in place until 2030, when the next independent redistricting process is scheduled to take place. The East Bay will not see any changes, with the 12th District, covering Oakland, Berkeley, and other East Bay cities and represented by Lateefah Simon, remaining intact. Modoc County, a rural Northern California county, will be merged with the Bay Area's Marin County, likely flipping the district's representation from Republican to Democratic."
Proposition 50 passed statewide, with early Alameda County returns showing 80.1% support from mail-in ballots and 19.1% opposed. Statewide returns with 11.5% reported showed 57.9% support and 41.1% opposition. Turnout appeared high, with long wait times at many Los Angeles polling sites and over 333,000 Alameda voters casting ballots before Election Day. The new congressional maps will remain in place until 2030. The East Bay’s 12th District remains unchanged, while Modoc County will be merged with Marin County, likely flipping that district from Republican to Democratic. Redrawn lines in San Diego and Orange counties are expected to dilute Republican strongholds.
