Los Angeles County prosecutors say 33-year-old Jenia Resha Belt struck and killed 18-year-old Braun Levi on May 4 in Manhattan Beach while speeding on a suspended license with a blood alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit. Belt reportedly has a prior conviction for driving drunk. Levi was a top national-ranked boys tennis player who died a month before high school graduation. Levi's mother called California's DUI laws broken and vowed to work with state Sen. Bob Archuleta to craft legislation to restructure penalties. A CalMatters series and the district attorney noted rising roadway deaths since 2010 tied to repeat drunk drivers and speeding.
"California's current DUI laws are broken and weak and fail to protect families like ours, and it's devastating,"
"His death haunts my every breath, every day."
"He had a smile for everybody. He had a heart for everybody. I miss him so much."
"The feeling, the sight, the smell of identifying our son's body will never leave my mind, body or soul, so I will not be silent,"
