Air Canada has suspended its plans to resume operations after the flight attendants' union defied a return-to-work order issued by the Canada Industrial Relations Board. The strike has affected approximately 130,000 travelers daily, particularly during the busy summer season. The union, representing 10,000 flight attendants, stated it would not comply with the order. The federal government intervened, claiming the economic situation required a speedy resolution. The airline announced it would resume flights the following evening, while the union plans to contest the order as unconstitutional.
The Canada Industrial Relations Board ordered airline staff back to work by 2 p.m. Sunday after the government intervened and Air Canada said it planned to resume flights Sunday evening.
Hancock said the 'whole process has been unfair' and said the union will challenge what it called an unconstitutional order.
Air Canada said in a statement that the union 'illegally directed its flight attendant members to defy a direction from the Canadian Industrial Relations Board.'
Flight attendants chanted 'Don't blame me, blame AC' outside Pearson.
