Starting February 11, Air Transat will no longer offer free carry-on baggage for its lowest fare, Eco Budget, requiring customers to only bring a personal item. This change aligns with similar policies from Canadian rivals like Air Canada and WestJet, who have also eliminated free carry-on for their cheapest options. The policy, applicable on specific routes, aims to allow customers to pay only for necessary services, reflecting industry trends amidst rising operational costs and aiming to maintain competitive pricing in the market.
As of Feb. 11, travellers using Eco Budget, the lowest fare option, can only bring a personal item, such as a purse or small backpack.
These changes will allow travellers using these fares to 'only pay for the services they really need,' the company said.
The new baggage rules apply to flights to and from South America, the U.S., and on domestic flights within Canada.
Top airline executives faced questions over skyrocketing baggage fees, rejecting accusations of price-gouging and emphasizing competitive base fares.
