Back-to-work orders, wages, U.S. tariffs at centre of Toronto's Labour Day rallies | CBC News
"We face unprecedented attacks, including Trump['s] tariffs, threats of annexation and a federal government that won't allow workers to bargain a fair deal," Geordie Dent, a communications and data coordinator with the Toronto and York Region Labour Council, said at the parade."
""The government has poisoned the bargaining climate and made settlements less likely, leading to more disruption and longer work stoppages," the regional labour council said in a release issued Thursday."
Thousands of workers and union members gathered in downtown Toronto for the Labour Day parade under the theme "A Canada for Workers: Made Here, Paid Here." Union leaders urged a united front against perceived attacks on workers' rights, citing U.S. tariffs and repeated federal use of Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code to end strikes. Labour officials say Section 107 interventions have poisoned the bargaining climate, reduced chances of settlements and prolonged disruptions. The provision was used to send Air Canada employees back to work within hours, yet unions continued to picket until a tentative agreement was reached.
