The U.S. Coast Guard intercepted 99 migrants from Haiti in an overloaded boat headed towards the Turks and Caicos last week. The migrants were stopped 35 miles off the coast and were brought back to Haiti aboard the Cutter Seneca. The Coast Guard emphasizes the dangers of illegal migration by sea, stressing that overloaded vessels lack essential safety equipment and put lives at risk. Since October, 412 people from Haiti have been intercepted at sea, with a total of 857 repatriated over the year spans from October 2021 to September 2022.
The Coast Guard remains steadfast in our defense of the U.S. maritime borders and approaches with patrols in the Florida Straits, Windward and Mona Passages to interdict unlawful maritime migration attempts.
Attempting illegal migration in overloaded, unsafe vessels with no safety equipment is extremely dangerous and puts you and your loved one's lives at risk. Don't take to the sea just to be sent back.
