Leonard Peltier, the Native American activist, was released from a Florida prison following President Biden's commutation of his life sentence to home confinement. Peltier, who maintained he did not kill two FBI agents during a 1975 confrontation, has spent nearly five decades in prison and is viewed by many as a political prisoner. His release was both celebrated by supporters and criticized by law enforcement, including former FBI Director Christopher Wray, who labeled him a "remorseless killer." Peltier will return to his reservation to live with family and friends.
He represents every person who's been roughed up by a cop, profiled, had their children harassed at school... Nick Estes, a professor of American Indian Studies.
Biden did not pardon Peltier. But his Jan. 20 commutation of Peltier's sentence to home confinement, noting Peltier had spent most of his life behind bars.
Twenty-four months of justice is all we ask... it's about time that others' voices are finally heard as well.
He didn't stop to speak with reporters or the roughly two dozen supporters who gathered outside the gates to celebrate his release.
