Over 100 people rallied near the U.S. consulate in Toronto to express support for Canadian sovereignty, organized by the advocacy group True North Strong. The event highlighted frustrations over recent U.S. policies under President Trump, including deportations and foreign stances. Organizer Ang Stratton emphasized collective action for humanitarian issues, urging Canadians to unite and amplify their voices. Longtime MP Charlie Angus reinforced the message, declaring a strong Canadian identity while expressing defiance against becoming subservient to U.S. influence. The rally symbolized hope and determination among participants to advocate for their values and country.
Longtime northern Ontario MP Charlie Angus, who spoke at the rally, said it's extremely important for Canadians to come together to show that Canada is strong. He has said he won't seek re-election. "We will never, ever, ever be the 51st state," Angus said to the cheering crowd.
Organizer Ang Stratton said a handful of people who were feeling frustrated and hopeless created the group as an outlet to express their concern about recent domestic and foreign policy changes made by U.S. President Donald Trump, including mass deportations and the shifting U.S. position on Ukraine.
Stratton said her message to other Canadians is not to give up hope. "As Canada, we stand for humanitarian issues. We just want to continue to grow this community of people who care about what happens to other people in the world," she said.
He has said he won't seek re-election. Angus then led a chant of "elbows up!" The "elbows up" hockey phrase... has become a rallying cry..."
