The Ontario Liberal Party has suspended the campaign of Oshawa candidate Viresh Bansal following his controversial comments about the death of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Bansal's remarks, which he posted in response to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations linking Indian government agents to Nijjar's killing, drew widespread criticism. In a subsequent apology, Bansal acknowledged the offensiveness of his words, particularly towards the Sikh and LGBTQ2S+ communities, and accepted full responsibility for the distress caused by his statements.
"We have suspended our Oshawa candidate's campaign," Liberal press secretary Bahoz Dara Aziz said. This decision follows controversial remarks made by Bansal regarding the killing of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Bansal's comments came after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's statements concerning 'credible allegations' linking Indian government agents to Nijjar's death, causing significant backlash.
Bansal apologized, stating: "I want to sincerely apologize, especially to the Sikh and LGBTQ2S+ communities. My words were offensive and wrong, and I take full responsibility for the harm they caused."
