"Ontario Superior Court Chief Justice Geoffrey Morawetz has been outspoken about the need to modernize the province's justice system and said the change is long overdue. What we're trying to achieve is a system that works for everybody on a far more equitable timeline so that you can deliver justice in a system that is really quite responsive to the public and the public's needs, he told CBC Radio's Metro Morning earlier this week."
"Starting Tuesday, parts of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice will be online as part of a multi-year digital transformation project aiming to bring the court system into the 21st century. The new system will allow court users to file documents, access case information, schedule matters and appearances, pay fees and receive decisions electronically instead of having to go to a courthouse."
"The Ontario government announced the courts digital transformation initiative in 2021, describing it as the most significant single step forward in the digital evolution of justice in Canada. The initiative is also expected to help with delays and backlogs in Ontario's justice system, as courts have come under immense pressure in recent years. The ongoing strain on courts has come with major consequences for legal outcomes. Most criminal charges are now withdrawn, stayed or dismissed before a decision at trial, CBC News reported last November."
Parts of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice are transitioning online as part of a multi-year digital transformation to modernize court operations and improve public access. The platform enables electronic filing, case access, scheduling of matters and appearances, payment of fees and receipt of decisions without attending courthouses. The initiative, announced in 2021, received $166 million in 2023 and a development contract with Thomson Reuters. The project aims to address significant delays and backlogs that have increased pressure on courts and contributed to a rise in withdrawn, stayed or dismissed criminal charges before trial.
