Rio Tinto Iron and Titanium Inc. was fined $2 million by the Court of Quebec for eight counts of violating the Fisheries Act and the Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations.
The investigation revealed that at the time of these offences, this effluent was not treated, leading to harmful levels of nickel and a low pH that is detrimental to fish.
Rio Tinto stated that environmental protection remains a priority, stating that concrete measures to ensure compliance of their effluents have been implemented.
In 2024, Rio Tinto plans to invest $8 million to improve the system designed for capturing, pumping, and treating effluents, as part of its environmental commitments.
