The GST holiday ends on Saturday. Did it make a difference for shoppers and businesses? | CBC News
Briefly

As the two-month GST holiday ends, Canadians reflect on its varying impact. Imposed to alleviate holiday season costs, the break applied to items like restaurant meals and children's toys. Responses vary: while some, like Renee Jagdeo, felt it slightly encouraged dining out, others, like Andrew Macrae, noted no change in purchasing behavior. Fredericton resident Willis Storey highlighted relief amid rising food prices, indicating the tax break's necessity for some, though overall, its effectiveness remains debated among shoppers in cities like Toronto and Vancouver.
Renee Jagdeo, a Toronto resident, said that while she spent a bit more going out to restaurants, the GST break didn't change her behaviour that much.
The federal government imposed the temporary tax break... as a way to offset some of the costs of the holiday season.
Willis Storey, dining at a restaurant in Fredericton, said the tax break provided much-needed relief at a time when all food prices are high.
Andrew Macrae, also a Toronto resident, said it didn't change much... but in terms of behaviour or buying, it had no bearing.
