Toronto's University Health Network launches scientist recruitment campaign amid U.S. health cuts, layoffs | CBC News
Briefly

The University Health Network in Toronto has launched a new strategy called 'Canada Leads' to recruit 100 outstanding early-career health scientists globally, particularly from the U.S. This initiative aims to bolster Canadian medical research and innovation while stimulating economic growth. Selected scientists will receive a two-year funding commitment alongside mentorship and help with relocation. UHN's president emphasizes that investing in science can lead to significant economic benefits and help develop a domestic supply chain of medical products. The program's initial funding of $15 million will cover the first 50 recruits as part of a broader push for innovation.
"We know there is an incredible opportunity to supercharge our Canadian economy through bold investment in science and technology," Connor said.
"When you look around the world, the evidence is absolutely clear: nations that invest in science don't just lead in innovation, they lead in prosperity."
"We have to ask ourselves, why not? Why are we not reaping the full economic benefits of our own discoveries?"
UHN will spend $15 million to recruit the first 50 researchers, Smith said, with funding secured through philanthropic investments.
