The Lung Health Check clinical trial, a pioneering initiative, seeks to screen 30,000 individuals aged 55 to 74 from Centric Health GP practices through a detailed questionnaire. Aimed at detecting lung cancer earlier to improve treatment outcomes, the pilot involves the Irish Cancer Society's €4.9 million investment and Beaumont Hospital's expertise. Participants will get a comprehensive check, including breathing tests and CT scans, as well as annual follow-ups. With lung cancer being a leading cause of cancer deaths in Ireland, this program hopes to reduce mortality significantly by detecting cancers at an earlier stage.
"It is screening but also a bit more comprehensive than that," she added. Doing a CT scan on its own has the potential to pick up 3pc of cancers.
"Lung cancer is Ireland's biggest cancer killer, mainly because it is diagnosed later when it is difficult to treat. This historic investment by the Irish Cancer Society marks a turning point for lung cancer in Ireland."
