"My phone rings, and the [Lyft] board chair, Sean Aggarwal, is on the line, and he says, 'David, we've got an offer we think you can't refuse,'"
"'I said, 'No, that's ridiculous. I don't even know what you're suggesting,' Risher recalled. 'You need to hang up the phone immediately, and you can get back to work, do something which has a higher likelihood of success.'"
David Risher received an unexpected offer to become Lyft CEO on Valentine's Day from board chair Sean Aggarwal while serving on the board since 2021. The two Lyft cofounders, John Zimmer and Logan Green, planned to step back after more than a decade leading the company valued at $9.4 billion. Risher initially rejected the suggestion, prioritizing the global ed-tech nonprofit he cofounded, Worldreader, and urging the board to continue searching. After further consideration and a six-week decision process, Risher changed course and accepted the leadership role at Lyft.
