"From a state perspective, this is the largest issue in transportation funding going into 2025," Adam Hoffer, director of Excise Tax Policy for the Tax Foundation, said, highlighting the challenges caused by the rise of electric vehicles. "Every state has recognized the gas tax has done a pretty good job of funding road construction. It was a great user fee," he noted, indicating the need for a reevaluation of funding mechanisms as traditional gas tax revenues decline.
Broward County is estimating $81.7 million in gas tax revenues for road and bridge maintenance in the coming year, but that is $800,000 less than last year. The decline in revenues is attributed to a shift in transportation habits, such as increased mass transit use, remote work, carpooling, and the rise of electric cars, all of which are altering revenue sources for local governments.
