Mexico aims to boost local EV production
Briefly

President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized the need to create local supply chains for electric vehicles, stating, "We are going to generate supply chains so that everything that is in the electric car is manufactured in the country and we import as little as possible..." This initiative aims to bolster local production and reduce dependency on foreign imports.
Sheinbaum highlighted Mexico's existing capabilities in electric motor manufacturing, saying, "There are companies in Mexico that have been making electric motors for a long time, so the idea is to bring them together with Mexican researchers so that they can assemble this electric vehicle." This collaboration seeks to enhance domestic EV production.
Mentioning the development of a compact EV, Sheinbaum remarked, "Mexico's compact EV could rival those made in India" and it resembles smaller alternatives to motorcycles in India and China, reflecting a strategy towards producing accessible and safer local transport.
Regarding resources like lithium, Sheinbaum noted that "the Government is working on technology capable of extracting lithium at an affordable cost" which is critical, especially as Mexico's lithium reserves, embedded in clay, present processing challenges.
