In a stunning shift, automaker after automaker - from GM and Hyundai to Rivian and Mercedes - followed suit, adopting Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS). As of the end of 2023, almost every major automaker has committed to this new standard. Customers of non-Tesla vehicles, however, are still waiting for access to the expanded charging infrastructure, despite promises of adapters being on the way.
Tesla's charging network is widely recognized for its robust and user-friendly design, making it appealing to EV manufacturers. The NACS has over 36,499 ports available compared to only 16,925 CCS ports, demonstrating its rising status. By sharing its EV charging connector design, Tesla aimed to spur other automakers and network operators to embrace this technology, marking a significant shift in the EV landscape.
