Waymo Recalls 1,212 Robotaxis Because They Keep Crashing Into Things
Briefly

Waymo has recalled 1,212 vehicles due to software issues in its fifth-generation Automated Driving System that affected the detection of stationary and semi-stationary objects, leading to low-speed collisions with gates and chains. Following an NHTSA investigation triggered by several incidents, Waymo completed a fleet-wide software update that addressed these problems by December 2024. Despite the recall, there were no reported injuries from the collisions, and Waymo emphasized its commitment to improving safety with its technology across millions of autonomous miles driven.
Waymo stated, 'Our record of reducing injuries over tens of millions of fully autonomous miles driven shows our technology is making roads safer.'
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Waymo vehicles running the fifth-generation Automated Driving System (ADS) software have trouble 'with stationary and semi-stationary objects such as gates and chains.'
