A mountain lion cub in California is recovering from serious injuries sustained in a car accident and is showing signs he may soon be ready to return to the wild. After being found with a fractured skull and head trauma, he received specialized rehabilitation at the San Diego Humane Society. The team monitored his recovery for about 80 days, providing support until he could hunt alone and minimize human contact, indicating he is progressing towards independence, though he still needs to gain weight and meet survival benchmarks before release.
"His injuries were healing well" when staff examined him, the outlet reported. Miraculously, the cub didn't need surgery, which is a positive sign for his recovery.
The cub started hunting on his own and avoiding humans altogether, showing he'll soon be ready to return to the wild, officials said.
We work closely with CDFW to determine the best timing for his return to the wild," said Autumn Nelson, wildlife operations manager at the wildlife center.
